Seminar Description:
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and the Principles of Service-Orientation

Driven by the emergence of XML and Web Services, and further influenced by recent advancements in distributed computing technology, service-oriented architecture (SOA) has evolved to represent the IT industry's foremost computing platform.

The same manner in which mainframe systems were succeeded by client-server applications, and client-server environments then evolved into distributed solutions based on Web technologies, service-oriented computing is succeeding traditional distributed platforms on a global scale. All major software manufacturers and vendors are promoting support for SOA; some even through direct involvement in the development of open standards. As a result, every major development platform now officially supports the creation of service-oriented solutions.

SOA establishes a powerful platform for building solutions and unifying corporate intelligence, but it brings with it a multitude of new technology, concepts, and challenges. In order to achieve its benefits, you need to attain knowledge of what today’s SOA platform is comprised of, how it can leverage current XML and Web Services technologies, and how to best plan for a transition. Further, you need to understand what service-orientation is, and how it imposes unique requirements on the design of services and service-oriented solutions.

This seminar will assist you in attaining this understanding. It covers a wide variety of topics to provide you with a well-rounded knowledge of the multi-faceted SOA platform, as well as best practices to overcome common obstacles and pitfalls.

Topics covered include:
  • Service-Oriented Architecture Basics
  • The SOA Industry (How SOA is shaped by vendors and standards organizations)
  • Fundamental Aspects of the Web Services Framework related to SOA
  • Benefits and Pitfalls of SOA
  • The Principles of Service-Orientation
  • How to Use Service-Orientation to Build Service-Oriented Solutions
  • Fundamental Service-Oriented Analysis
  • Fundamental Service-Oriented Design
  • Service Abstraction Layers
  • Creating Business-Centric Services
  • Best Practices for Achieving SOA
About the Instructor

Thomas Erl the world’s top-selling SOA author.

His first SOA book “Service-Oriented Architecture: A Field Guide to Integrating XML and Web Services” is a strategic reference guide for creating integrated environments with contemporary technologies within the context of SOA and service-orientation. Released in 2004, this was one of the very first SOA books ever written. It was formally endorsed by senior members of IBM and Microsoft and with over 20,000 copies in print; this book has become the best-selling SOA book to date.

His second SOA book (just released in August, 2005) is entitled “Service-Oriented Architecture: Concepts, Technology, and Design” and is the world’s first “how-to” guide to building service-oriented solutions from the ground up. It provides step-by-step processes for service-oriented analysis, service-oriented design and service-oriented business process design, as well as an in-depth exploration of service-orientation as a design paradigm. Already 10,000 copies of this book have been printed and over 50 U.S. colleges (including Princeton and MIT) are sampling this title for inclusion in their 2006 course curriculum. The book was formally endorsed by senior members of IBM, Microsoft, and Sun Microsystems, and has already been translated into two languages.

Thomas is the founder of SOA Systems Inc., a company providing strategic SOA training and consulting services for international clients, including Fortune 500 companies. SOA Systems is a recognized contributor to the SOA community and has established a mainstream methodology for building SOA in alignment with current industry platform support. SOA Systems is a WS-I Advocate and a voting member of OASIS. Through his work with SOA Systems, Thomas has led several research efforts, including the XML & Web Services Integration Framework (XWIF) and ServiceOrientation.org. He is also a member of several OASIS technical committees, including WS-BPEL, WS-Security, SOA Reference Model, and SOA Adoption Blueprints.
